What are Maintenance Districts?

This data depicts the maintenance (also called assessment) district boundaries in the City of Salinas. Assessment Districts are finance mechanisms under the California Street and Highway Code for the purpose of allowing cities and counties to make improvements and developments within a district. Disctrict boundaries are drawn with the approval of property owners who pay their fair share of the capital cost to make improvements in their district. Assessments (levies or charges) paid by owners are set in the Engineer's Report. Improvement projects that can be financed through these special disctricts include streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutter, sewer, and lighting to name a few.
