More than 300 people attended the 2019 Salinas Valley Sustainability Fair & Electric Vehicle (EV) Test Drive on Saturday, January 19, learning about local resources and renewing their commitment to sustainability and clean energy.

Against the backdrop of City Hall, the event featured 16 speakers, from governmental leaders, to community initiatives, green businesses, and more, all of whom shared their challenges in and vision for Monterey County. "We have some incredible opportunities to talk about sustainability in this region, "City Councilman Steve McShane, the event's organizer, said. "There are people who have been thinking about and working towards sustainability for years. It was so exciting to hear their experiences and connect them with local leaders and citizens, people who care about leaving the Salinas Valley better than they found."

Local car dealerships provided electric vehicle test drives of hybrid and zero emission cars, including a Chevrolet Leaf, a Honda Clarity Plug-In, a Nissan Leaf, a Tesla Model 3, Tesla Model S, and Tesla Model X. Participants experienced more than 150 test drives during the fair, sponsored by the Monterey Bay Air Resources District (MBARD) with funding from the California energy Commission.

Another highlight was seeing two of the city's electric vehicles, including one of the Monterey-Salinas-Transit's (MST) electric buses, manufactured by the BYD("Build Your Dreams"), another sponsor of the event.

Many thanks to event sponsors and partners: Monterey Bay Air Resources District, the City of Salinas, Monterey Bay Electric Vehicle Alliance, Ecology Action, Scudder Solar, Republic Services, Monterey Bay Community Power, Association of Monterey Bay Area Governments, Salinas Valley Recycles, sustainable Salinas, Transportation Agency for Monterey County, CA Energy Commission, Monterey Regional Waste Management District, BYD, Communities for Sustainable Monterey County, as well as test-driver car dealership partners My Nissan, Gilroy Chevrolet, Tesla of Monterey-Seaside, and Sam Linder Honda.
