2018 Chinatown Block Party

On November 17, 2018, the City’s Community Development Department co-hosted its 2nd annual Chinatown Block Party event. The theme of the Block Party was “Housing starts in Chinatown” and works together with the City’s Chinatown Revitalization Plan. The City collaborated with New Harvest Christian Fellowship Church, Salinas Police department, Buddhist Temple, various organizations, car and bike clubs, businesses and nonprofit service providers. There was live music, free food, clothing and hygiene items provided at no cost to the unsheltered residence living in Chinatown. There was a children’s play area at the Block Party with various activities including a bounce house (provided by the Library and Community Services Department), arts and crafts, food and face painting. The City also raffled off 7 bicycles to children in the community. The bicycles were provided by donations received from Mayor Joe Gunter, community members, Target and Walmart. The Chinatown Block Party was a great success and the City thanks all those who participated and volunteered their time and resources to make the event possible. The City also thanks the  Salinas Police department, especially Chief Frese for coming out and for bringing cars, the command center and recruits from the Salinas PD youth program.
