On May 13, 2019, the Community Development Department (CDD) held an informative workshop at the City Council Chamber Rotunda regarding temporary conversion of hotels and motels for interim or employee housing. This free event was designed to provide information to employers housing H2A workers and hotel/motel property about the process and requirements for temporarily converting hotels and motels into interim or employee housing. The workshop also served to ensure compliance with an ordinance approved by the Salinas City Council earlier this year which amended the Zoning Code to permit the temporary conversion to interim or employee housing at an existing property developed as a hotel or motel. More than a dozen property owners and employee housing coordinators attended the workshop and as of July 11, 2019, approximately 20 Temporary Use of Land Permit (TULP) applications have been received. Site inspections are currently under way, and staff anticipates approvals of the permits in the near future.  To learn more about obtaining a TULP for temporary interim or employee housing, or any other questions regarding the ordinance, please contact the CDD Current Planning staff at (831)758-7206.
