Jennifer Coile is retiring after over 30 years of government service. Jennifer received a bachelor’s Degree in history and Spanish with Honors from the University of Maryland and a Master’s of City and Regional Planning Degree from Harvard Graduate School of Design. She worked at the federal level for six years, first for the United States Consulate in Italy and Argentina, and then for the National Park Service.

Jennifer worked more than 30 years with several California communities. In 2013, she began her employment with the City of Salinas Community Development Department Housing Division, first as an Administrative Supervisor than as an independent contract planner. While working with the Housing Division, she was instrumental in re-establishing the City’s annual celebration of the National Community Development Week and facilitating the continued operation of the Small Business Development Center.

In 2014 began working as a project manager “special assistant” for the Special Projects Division (later renamed to Advanced Planning Division) of the Community Development Department.  She successfully completed several important and critical planning projects while working in this division, including but not limited to the 2015- 2023 Housing Element Update and the 2014 – 2015 Housing Initiatives Outreach effort, which won the 2016 Northern Californian and State of California American Planning Association (APA) Award for Opportunity and Empowerment. Jennifer was also key to the completion of the 2016 Subdivision Ordinance and the 2018 Farmworker Housing Study and Action Plan for the Salinas and Pajaro Valleys.

Jennifer has been deeply involved in serving the communities where she has lived and worked by supporting young artists and mentoring other youth, volunteering for the San Benito County Fair, Salinas Valley Comic Con and other organizations and by her on-going efforts to promote equality and fairness for all people.

We thank Jennifer for her contributions and service to the City of Salinas and the community as a whole.
