Maria Orozco is retiring June 30, 2018.  Over the past 34 years, Maria has exemplified dedication to public service, including the coordination of community-based events and festivities such as the annual Steinbeck Festival, El Grito Celebration and Christmas Posadas, and the support of economic development efforts in East Salinas.

She began her career with the City in February 1984 as the Secretary to the Library Director and was awarded the Steinbeck Scholar Award in 1991 from Ball State University for her efforts planning the annual Steinbeck Festival and dedication to Steinbeck studies in California.

In January 1994, Maria transferred to the Community Development Department as a Community Improvement Aide in the Housing Division, where she assisted many families in achieving their dream of homeownership under the city’s First Time Homebuyer program.

Throughout her career, Maria has been a champion for small businesses in East Salinas and has played a key role supporting the preparation of the Alisal Vibrancy Plan.  As an Assistant Redevelopment Project Manager in the Redevelopment Agency, Maria was instrumental in the formation of the business improvement district in East Salinas known as the Salinas United Business Association (SUBA), and in managing business façade programs to improve the appearance of East Salinas commercial corridors.   Post-Redevelopment Maria continued to connect small business with technical assistance and the Grow Salinas Fund loan program.

We thank Maria for her dedicated service and contributions to the City of Salinas and we wish her well in her retirement.
