El Grito booth activities

The Salinas community came together to celebrate Mexican Independence Day at the El Grito Festival on Sunday, September 16, 2018. The festival, put on by the Cultural Committee of Salinas, included dancing, music, shopping, and traditional Mexican food vendors.

The City's Community Development Department also had a booth at El Grito to share information, get input for the Alisal Vibrancy Plan, and raffle off some fun Fall gift baskets! Booth visitors were asked what businesses they would like to see more of in the Alisal, where in the neighborhood would be a good spot for a public plaza, and what amenities would they like to see in that plaza. Participants got one ticket for each activity and an extra if they followed a City of Salinas account on social media. Based on the number of activity responses, staff estimates that over 150 people got to weigh in on these questions! Staff also had bilingual outreach material and guides to City regulations available.

Many thanks to all who participated, including our staff and especially to the organizers –the event demonstrated great community spirit and brought together many of those who work in the area. If you missed us at El Grito we will also be at Ciclovia event on Sunday, October 7th. hope to see you there!
