Underpass at Market Street, one of the underpasses where art will go

The Salinas-Alisal Vibrancy Neighborhood Beautification Project (Highway US 101) is moving along and City Staff, in partnership with The Arts Council for Monterey County (Arts4MC), and Caltrans are seeking California-based artists or artist teams (request for qualifications), with a preference to Monterey County artists to submit their qualifications to create and install large-scale murals on three Alisal underpasses.

These underpasses are located on Alisal Street, Market Street and Sanborn Road along Highway 101.

Launched by Governor Newsom as part of his California Comeback Plan, Clean California is investing $1.1 billion for state and local governments as part of the State Highway Beautification Project. Funds are dedicated to transforming community gateways and public areas along highways, streets and roads. This grant will turn underpasses into lively pieces of art, as well as enhance adjacent landscaping and improve lighting, resulting in vibrant entryways into the Alisal.
