Three City of Salinas VISTA members joined over 40 other county-wide AmeriCorps members in a ceremony honoring their year of service. Jissella Duarte served in the Recreation and Community Services Department, completely overhauling the City's volunteer system, creating new policies and practices to improve recruiting and management. Jennifer Alcantar and Jimmy Stephens served in the Community Development Department. Jennifer organized a "Healthy Living" speaker series for our libraries and recreation centers, bringing health professionals and resources out to share with the community, and supported the Community Health and Safety Working Group for the Alisal Vibrancy Plan (AVP). Jimmy helped Interim Inc. build their capacity to connect homeless to housing resources by analyzing their pilot program to identify common barriers to service facing that population and recommending solutions, as well as supporting the Housing Working Group for the AVP.

The Monterey County Office of Education and California State University, Monterey Bay organized the event, which featured a keynote address on community service by the Honorable Sam Farr, former Representative of California's 17th and 20th Districts from 1993-2016. In addition to the City of Salinas, Monterey County AmeriCorps members worked with a diverse range of institutions, including local school districts and non-profits providing services such as computers for low-income residents, healthy and sustainable food, and transition services for veterans, just to name a few.
