Salinas Fire Chief Barreto has long experience in our region, having risen through the ranks since 1992, when he started as a reserve firefighter with the Pajaro Valley Fire Protection District.

He joined the Watsonville Fire Department in 1997 and was promoted to Captain in 2003, Chief of the Fire Prevention Division in 2010, and Fire Chief in 2014.

He is a past President of the Pajaro Valley Firefighters union and past Treasurer-Secretary of the Watsonville Professional Firefighters union.

Chief Barreto has a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Marketing from California State University Sacramento (1990) and an Associate of Science in Fire Management from Cabrillo College (1994). He also has a long list of professional certifications as a firefighter, emergency responder, technician, manager, and commander.

Chief Barreto began leading the Salinas Fire Department on Apr. 29, 2019.
