On Tuesday, April 24, the crew from Medic Engine 1 was returning from an emergency incident when they saw an opportunity to help a neighbor in need.  They observed a resident on crutches trying to mow his overgrown lawn with a power mower.  The resident had suffered a leg amputation from an accident many years ago.

Captain David Furey, Firefighter Mario Valverde and Firefighter-Paramedic Patrick McBrian sprang into action.  They offered to help the gentleman and he politely refused, citing the fire department being too busy to mow his lawn.  After some discussion and convincing, the resident obliged and firefighter’s Valverde and McBrian made quick work of that lawn.

“I am so proud of Engine 1’s crew for their actions, “says Interim Fire Chief Brett Loomis.  “We often see so much tragedy and suffering in our work. It’s wonderful for us to be proactive and make this gentleman’s life a bit easier for a day.”

Our friend on California Street thanked our crew with conversation and a few bottles of water which was more than enough.  Our firefighters take pride in every service that they provide to our community.  Whether it is fighting a fire, responding to an emergency medical call, or helping a neighbor in need, we stand ready to serve 24 hours a day!
