Through the California Fire Mutual Aid System, the Salinas Fire Department requested a cadaver dog to assist in searching for possible victims in the aftermath of the 3rd Alarm Fire in Chinatown. Chief Edmond Rodriguez reports a canine from the Mountain View Fire Department was requested and responded to the scene to conduct searches with a trained handler. The canine has some initial hits in one area of the building but is was determined this was a deceased rodent. Fortunately, there were no injuries or fatalities at this fire. Chief Rodriguez credits this to the great training and command experience of our personnel on large scale incidents. The cause of the blaze was determined to be a cooking fire to close to the building which ignited the structure and spread quickly.
