Oath of Office Ceremony Celebrates Promotions and Newest Officers

An Oath of Office Ceremony was held on Friday, September 28, to celebrate the promotions of Commander Matt Maldonado, Sgt. Michael Batchelor and Sgt. Albert Duran. Salinas PD also welcomed our newest officers Shivdev Dhillon, Abel Gomez and Alex Zamora.

Commander Maldonado was born and raised in Salinas. He started his law enforcement career with the Monterey County Sheriff’s Department in 1992 and was hired by Salinas PD in 1994. Commander Maldonado served in various assignments while in the patrol division and was promoted to Sergeant in 2004, where he supervised patrol operations, Violence Suppression Unit/Swat and the Field Training unit to name a few.

Commander Maldonado has been working with Commander Stan Cooper as Co-Project Manager for the new Salinas Police Service Headquarters for the last three years. He has been the recipient of the Monterey County Peace Officer Association’s Award of Merit three times.

Sergeant Michael Batchelor was born in South Carolina and was raised in the Salinas area. He joined the U. S. Army where he served multiple deployments to the Middle East and other parts of the world, and was a member of the Special Operations Community. Sgt. Batchelor completed his 20 years of military service in 2015 and retired as a Captain.

Sgt. Batchelor was hired by the Salinas Police Department in 1999 and has held several assignments with the department including Field Training Officer and Gang Suppression Officer with VSU. He has also had collateral duties of SWAT Officer/Team Leader and Firearms Instructor.

Sgt. Albert Duran was born in Mexico and raised in Salinas. He started his law enforcement career with the Monterey Police Department in 1995 and in 2006, decided he wanted to work in his hometown Salinas and was hired by Salinas PD.

Sgt. Duran has worked multiple assignments with Salinas PD such as Field Training Officer, Motorcycle Traffic Officer and Investigations among others. He has received the Monterey County Peace Officer Association’s Award of Merit and the Salinas PD Outstanding Police Duty Award.

Officer Abel Gomez was born and raised in Salinas. He attended local schools and worked for the Salinas City Elementary School District for six years prior to shifting to a career in law enforcement. He worked for the Gonzales Police Department for two years and was recently hired by Salinas PD.

Officer Shivdev Dhillon was born and raised in San Jose, California. He attended Rocky Mountain College in Montana where he earned a degree in Communication Studies. After college, he attended Coyote Creek Basic Police Academy as a self-sponsored recruit. Prior to being hired by Salinas PD, Officer Dhillon worked as a Park Ranger Aide at Mid-Peninsula Open Space District where he gained experience as a certified Emergency Response Technician.

Officer Alex Zamora was born and raised in Watsonville, California. He attended CSU Sacramento where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice. Officer Zamora worked with Salinas PD for six years before moving to Gilroy PD and Watsonville PD.  He subsequently returned to Salinas PD and is excited to be back and looks forward to serving the City of Salinas.
