Salinas PD K9 Avi Injured as Suspect is Apprehended

Salinas K9 Avi was injured as he assisted in the apprehension of a burglary suspect on November 12, 2018. A suspect was found inside a closed business in the 400 block of Front St. and refused to follow the officers instructions to exit the business and turn himself in. It was alleged the suspect may have had a metal object in his possession and he made threats to the owner of the business who had arrived.

Officer Jim Knowlton said his partner Avi entered the building and bit the suspect in the armpit area during the arrest. Unfortunately, Avi was also injured in the process suffering a broken tail. A small section was removed during surgery. Officer Knowlton said the surgery went well and Avi is recovering nicely. Avi will be unable to perform his normal duties for approximately ten days.

Avi’s and our other Salinas PD canines bravery during the performance of their duties is never taken for granted and is always appreciated. Wish you a quick recovery Avi!
