For the second year in a row, the City of Salinas has been chosen as a finalist in the “Dream Big” category.  Along with other cities such as Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Omaha, the City of Salinas will compete for funds for its innovative idea and project.  Amazon Web Services is working towards helping local and regional governments innovate by simplifying IT workloads that are challenging and making it easier for governments to deliver services to their residents. Through the City on a Cloud Innovation Challenge, Amazon Web Services recognizes organizations that serve as hubs of innovation and leadership.

The City of Salinas has implemented a crowd-sourcing app for residents to report damage during emergency events like extreme weather, earthquakes, and other natural disasters. The city is developing an Operations Management System for non-emergency needs to be housed and accessed remotely, in case IT systems are unavailable at City Hall. Data from crowd sourcing is used to predict and identify damaged regions and optimize response and repair actions from city staff. The Operations Management System and dashboards will utilize the data to better understand infrastructure repair costs, increase efficiency, and improve real-time data-driven decisions.
