On Sunday, October 6th the Salinas community came together at Ciclovía to enjoy activities such as running, biking, skating and dancing. With much preparation, 1.6 miles of Alisal Street, from Main Street to Sanborn Street was converted from an arterial street to a large plaza for this 7th year of first Open Streets event in Monterey County. Open Streets events across the country promote healthy living as well as active transportation.  Other cities in Monterey County has followed Salinas’ lead and have implemented Open Streets events of their own.

Public Works Staff was also present to support the event’s active transportation message and provide information on the Downtown Complete Streets Project, a project designed to enable safe access for all users, including pedestrians, bicyclists motorists and public transportation riders of all ages and abilities. In line with the Open Streets promotion of active transportation, the Downtown Completes Streets Project provides infrastructure improvements that encourages active transportation.

SAFE, EFFICIENT, and COMPLETE. The Downtown Complete Streets Project will provide improvements along the West Alisal Street corridor from Front Street to Blanco Road and on Lincoln Street from West Alisal Street to Market Street. Project improvements includes enhanced crosswalks, curb extensions, upgraded traffic signals and bicycle lanes. The project breaks ground in Spring 2020.  To learn more on why the Downtown Complete Streets Project is safe, efficient and complete or to sign up for project updates, please visit the Downtown Complete Streets website:
