Last week marked the kick-off of the Public Arts Master Planning for the City of Salinas. 

On Friday, January 4th, the RRM Design Group, which is based in San Luis Obispo, held 9 Public Art Stakeholder meetings to assist in the development of a Public Arts Master Plan for the City of Salinas. Stakeholders had an opportunity to express their desires, concerns and recommendations for City art. A "Pop-Up" booth was also set up at the First Fridays Art Walk to gather information from the general public, and was followed by a roaming bus tour of the City on Saturday, January 5th, to identify existing public art and possible locations for future art.

In June of 2017, the City Council approved a Public Art Program ordinance to establish and fund public art, setting aside 0.5% of the total cost of certain capital improvement projects to help fund it. The first Commission meeting took place in April of 2018, and is charged with presenting an annual plan for spending to Council each year. The RRM Design Group was selected to assist in developing a 10-year comprehensive Public Art Master Plan.
