Congratulations to this year's Youth & Government Institute participants who were selected to be part of the 4-week program.  Last week, youth met City Manager Ray Corpuz and learned about his role in making Salinas City government work. There were plenty of questions for the City Manager during the open discussion period, and youth demonstrated a high degree of civic engagement!

"This is an exceptional group of teenagers, and they are passionate about Salinas," says Ana Ambriz, Neighborhood Services Coordinator, who facilitates the program. The group will be conducting a Mock Council Meeting on Friday, July 12th, at 10:30 a.m. at the City Hall Rotunda which is open to the public. The topic will be affordable housing and the challenges it presents for Salinas residents.

"She comes home so excited," says Robert Sapien whose daughter is one of the 31 participants. "She now understands more about how decisions are made that affect our family."

Participating youth are all Salinas residents, and represent local high schools including North Salinas, Alisal, Alvarez, and Palma. The program is designed to help youth understand local government, increase civic engagement and learn about opportunities for employment and leadership within city government.
