Eaton Fire-K9 Deployment
Published on January 21, 2025
Over the weekend, our K9 Cruz and his handler, Captain Pimentel, arrived safely at the Eaton Fire base camp at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. They immediately got to work, teaming up with Cal Fire behavioral health staff to provide critical peer support to first responders.
The peer support team—comprised of seven K9s, handlers, and clinicians—has been connecting with firefighters, law enforcement, EMS, and National Guard personnel to support the mental health and resilience of those facing these devastating fires.
Cruz and Captain Pimentel visited fire stations FS11, FS12, and FS66, which were among the first engine companies to respond to the Eaton Fire. These crews faced unimaginable challenges: ferocious winds, multiple structure fires, water supply issues, and limited resources. Yet, their bravery and dedication never wavered!
Additionally, Cruz and Capt. Pimentel visited the National Guard Armory Training Base in Los Alamitos, where they attended a shift change staff briefing with updates on the Palisades and Eaton Fires. Cruz brought much-needed comfort to the National Guard personnel working tirelessly around the clock.
We are incredibly proud of the impactful work being done by Cruz, his handler, and the entire peer support team!
